Wool is a wonderful natural fibre that keeps you warm, is breathable and is biodegradable. It’s also a much more sustainable alternative to knitwear made from synthetic fibres.
We go far and beyond to source our yarns. Our yarns have to be natural, but as well as this we search for origin, quality, price, colour and minimum order quantities for production that are not too high. This may seem easy & the norm, but is a hard task in a market overcrowded with synthetic blends and mass produced items.
Our knitwear is made using the best quality materials we could source. The raw material, and the welfare of the animals is very important for us. As we believe in the high quality of our wool we would like to give you an in-depth description of the different types of wool we use in our knitwear collections.
MERINO LAMBSWOOL
Lambswool is wool that is obtained from the first shearing of a sheep, after its coat has come in, at around the age of seven months. The fibres of lambswool are smoother, stronger and hold more elasticity than other wool. Softer and lighter than New Wool, it also has good insulation properties and is a good choice for anyone with a sensitive skin. Our Lambswool is shipped from Australia, and comes from the Merino breed of sheep. Lambswool can be recycled, it’s compostable and biodegradable, leaving no detrimental effects on the environment. All of our thick gauge styles are knitted using this wool. It has 20.5 microns. This wool is purchased from a Scottish mill that has been spinning wool for over 200 years. Our lambswool has an extra twist to give extra strength and less pilling. It produces a fine soft, durable, top quality cloth.
SUPER GEELONG MERINO LAMBSWOOL
Originally sourced from Merino sheep in Geelong, Australia, only a tiny percentage of Merino is fine enough to be classified as Geelong Wool. Geelong boasts a fine softness and warmth that rivals cashmere for its sheer luxury. This fine merino wool is used for our fine knits jumpers. Luxuriously soft and warming. Our Geelong wool has 19.2 microns. This wool is purchased from a Scottish mill that has been spinning wool for over 200 years. This Geelong lambswool is a single yarn and produces lighter, more refined fabric.
NEW WOOL
New Wool is wool that has been woven for the first time. New wool fibres are strong, fine and durable. Items made from new wool are subsequently warm, insulating and long-lasting. 'Pure' New Wool is wool that has not been blended with another fibre and is used to describe an item that is made from 100% New Wool. This type of wool is mainly used in our hand knitted collection and it comes from New Zealand. Is thick and raw but extremely warm.
MOHAIR
Mohair is a silk-like yarn taken from the coat of the Angora goat. Known for its durability, lustre and sheen. With its excellent insulating properties and crease resistance, it is considered to be a luxury fibre like Cashmere, Angora and Silk. Ours is blend with only 10% nylon to make the thread more durable and resistant to knitting. We used mohair in our hand knitted styles. The wool is light and hairy, but very warm. It comes from Tibet
We take great care in working with the suppliers who treat their workers with fairness and respect likewise when it comes to wool we only source from suppliers who prohibit cruelty towards sheep. The main source of cruelty in the wool industry is a practice known as mulesing which involves sheep being physically scarred to prevent them from catching diseases which could lead to their death. At BIBICO we make sure that all the wool we use is sourced from countries where mulesing has been banned.
