Since opeing our shop in Bath we have been on the look out for beautiful ethically made jewellery that fits with our style and ethos. We love the 3 brands listed below not only because they support smaller producers and artisans from developing countries they are make simple but beautiful jewellery that is sold at affordable prices.
A Beautiful Story
Their story started in Kathmandu Nepal where founder Dutch founder Cathelijne met with Dambar the owner of of small silver factory. The factory employed 20 talented silversmiths who created the most amazing jewellery. Cathelijne herself came from a corporate marketing background in the Netherlands but wanted to move away from working with companies that were just focused on driving profits.
Together Dambar and Cathelijne created their first product - a lucky bracelet made with shards of silver. Not only would the bracelet look great but it would also bring luck to the wearer. The bracelet incorporated Eastern symbols of luck.
A little while later Cathelijne met a group of Nepalese women who had started there own knitted jewelly business called”Beads flor Life” and their goal was to achieve financial independence. A Beautiful Story now sells many of their pieces which has helped Beads to Life grow there staff to 15 people.

Made are proably one of the most popular fair trade jewellery brands and it is clear to see why. Each piece of their jewellery is hand crafted by highly skilled artisans in Kenya. They employ over 60 men and women from highly skilled craftesmen and women to novices eager to learn.
Made firmly believe this investment in developing sustainable jobs that benefit and empower their communities is a key ingredient to them being able to make such beautiful jewellery. All the materials used to make their jewellery are sourced locally thereby suporting communities within the vicinity of their workshop and they also use recycled materials where they can.

The Far And Wide Collective
This is not just one brand but a collection of small jewellery brands all under one roof.
Started by Hedvig Christine Alexander spent seven years in Afghanistan working in international development. She established Building Markets in Afghanistan, an organization stimulating the local economy by encouraging international businesses to support local goods and services. Later, she became the Managing Director of Turquoise Mountain, a charity promoting education of traditional Afghan art and architecture, and oversaw a major heritage and regeneration program in the Old City of Kabul.
During her time in Afghanistan and traveling in the region, Hedvig Christine saw how even the most talented craftswomen and men were unable to connect with buyers abroad. Consequently, they could not benefit from the increased demand for beautiful, authentic, and handmade items in recent years. To resolve this problem Hedvig Christine set up Far and Wide to promote these amazing producers and offer consumers from developed countries access to their unique and beautiful jewellery.
